Funeral notices question

Should a funeral notice be posted to Events?

My thoughts:

Yes - It lets people know who might have been overlooked in the word-of-mouth discussions, memorial notices to blogs, and group announcements.

No - It's a greifer-magnet.

No - Anybody who was close to the deceased would have already heard by now.

No - People might see the list of speakers and memorial performers, go for that instead of the true spirit of the occasion.

Yours?

Oliveloafville

We all know what lunch meats we bring...
Only olives and looooooooooooaf.

For some reason, Keeme Brown is obsessed with olive loaf.

Or maybe I am obsessed with Keeme Brown's obsession with it.

Let's see... food... Second Life...

When have we heard this one before?

So, I went to the store and bought some olive loaf.

"How do you want it sliced?" they asked.

"Thin," I said.

A minute later, they bring me a thin slice of it.

"Want to taste?" they ask.

"Oh, God no!" I say.

"What?" they ask.

"It's for an art project," I said.

Everybody stares.

This is the best photograph I could get of it with my camera:

So, I wrote down the current ground textures and replaced them:

The most un nom nom nommable island on the grid, eh.

Blech.

(I gave the textures to Keeme in case he wanted to try to make an SL olive loaf.)

PI

A few days ago, GoSpeed said I was a no-bullshit kinda guy, cards on the table... tell it like it is.

Radar has a few things to say about Podcast Island and people's opinions of it.

There's been ups. There's been downs.

There's a place in my heart for PI and PI2 because that got Crap Mariner into SL.

I keep thinking "What can I do to help that I won't feel like it's gonna fizzle later on?"

I do know of two new things that are going to provide a spark of activity and traffic, I hope:

Stuart's bringing SLPN there with the potential of getting regular podcast recordings there. Hopefully this will build up the Podmafia fan base as well as get interesting discussions of SL issues with Radar's own "town hall" episodes.

And, I'm not going to pull punches on this one - sometimes the threesome gets stale. "Do you have any topics?" "What are we talking about?" "Inside joke 1" "Inside Joke 2" "Inside Joke 3" zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Learn from the collapse of Secondcast, or repeat it.

The permanent version of the exhibit we put together for SL5B will be installed somewhere there. People wanting to learn about podcasting can learn some elements of it there before wandering off to research it more and try their hand at it.

That'll add a badly-needed educational aspect to podcasting. It won't be ivory tower of primitives, sure, but Radar's videos are amazing. If I ever got a Mac, I'd have no fear of getting abck up and running with producing 100WS, eh.

One thing that could help is moving the meetups to a time other than Monday at 6PM.

Yes, I know, nobody owns any particular timeslot. Hell, look in events and there's 10,000 things to do at any moment in time.

Among podcasters, though, which I do think is some kind of social network/community thing... you've got Open Mike and you've got the monthly Podcaster Meetups. Even once a month, it's still at the same time. And I think Rich and Yxes would be valuable members of any discussion with the invited speakers at the meetups.

Let's cut the bullshit for a second, okay? That last Podmafia's got a whiff of bad blood going about that time conflict. Just. Fucking. Say. It.

Fine. Yxes? Radar? Listen up - can we all just end that conflict? This crap's gone on long enough.

Heck, I'd be willing to make sure Clocktower events didn't conflict if the meetups were at, say 5. Or some other night.

I swore to avoid conflicts in scheduling on my part for the greater good, and I meant it. Tell me where to slide out of, and I'll slide quicker than shit through a goose.

Whatever helps the greater group, right?

I dumped my own weekly meetups to throw support to the monthly ones. And the whole "No, keep doing yours, this one's separate" response was bullshit... Harry Truman said to put all your eggs in one basket and guard that basket. Strength in unity, strength in numbers.

As for:

Certainly if I wanted to I could lob a few cheap shots back at people without even having to strain, but I’d rather not.

Got any for me? Because in my mind, they're not cheap shots.

There's opportunities for improvement on my part.

I invite any and all commentary, criticism, and suggestions for improvement on my management style, consensus-building methods, promotional efforts, and occasional underhanded vicious ankle-biting.

Certainly there’s areas where those of us who are there could do a lot better.

Everybody's got their own management styles, ownership models, trust levels... heck, watch Biz in SL with Cybergrrl Oh for another expression of the co-owner model in the form of Athena Isle that's actually profit-minded.

Cujus regio, cujus religio.

Here's the L$64,000 question - how do you measure what's working and what isn't? How do you measure success? How do you measure satisfaction? What makes you feel good?

Traffic? New podcasts? New friends? Laughs? New recipes? Money?

And if anybody tries to put a King Of Podcasting In SL Crown on my head, I'll take it off.

Glue it there, and I'll put my damn neck in the guillotine.

The grid already had an Adam Curry. And, thank God, he got the fuck off of it.

I've been fascinated with his stuff since I got an Edward Gorey Activity Book long, long ago. (It's pretty obvious that I resisted any attempts to be raised "normal" eh.)

The Doubtful Guest was a favorite of Piper's, and I'd read it to her as she curled up on a chair.

So when I saw an NPIRL blog post about this:

Shut up.

Buck up and get that shit done, soldier.

Boom. Pieces from SL5B arranged semi-chaotically with central pillar.

Yeah, I can move fast and adapt quickly.

So, anybody hiring?

A long time ago, I played soccer.

Some coaches liked ball handing and dribbling.

Others said trap-pass.

One used to say "No tippy-tappy."

That means no dribbling. Trap the ball, look around for a man getting open, and lead him with a pass.

Then move your fucking ass fast and get open for him.

The ball moves faster than your opponent. Get that ball moving and keep him running. Wear his ass out.

That's how you win.

When I'm having to go back and forth with someone to get bits of information to get something done, I'm reminded of the "tippy-tappy" that coach used to warn us against.

If you tippy-tappy too much, you get your ass clobbered by the other team.

Put everything into making that ball move. Lead folks with the information they need.

Keep it flowing. Keep going forward.

Shoot.

Score.

I sip my iced tea, realize the ice has long since melted, and smirk.

Media settings? Stream?

sigh

I've tippy-tappy enough for today.

I'll deal with it tomorrow. Or Saturday.

It'll wait.

I'll work up a better generic display at some point.

Maybe one with cogs and fanbelts and such. Folks like those things.

Another reason for education virtualization...

Fuel costs are making some US school systems ponder 4 day school weeks:

Facing a crippling increase in fuel costs, some rural U.S. schools are mulling a solution born of the '70s oil crisis: a four-day week.

Cutting out one day of school has been the key to preserving educational programs and staff in parts of Kentucky, New Mexico and Minnesota, outweighing some parents' concerns about finding day-care for the day off.

"For rural school districts where buses may travel 100 miles round-trip each day, there certainly are transportation savings worth considering," said Marc Egan, the director of federal affairs at the National School Boards Association.

Egan said about 100 schools in as many as 16 states have already moved to a four-day school week, many to save money on transportation, heating and cooling.

Pardon me for not breathing, but shipping a human body 100 miles a day for something that can be accomplished just as well with a well-planned distance learning project seems absurd.

Hell, downright cruel.

Make the ideas travel, not the humans.

Humans are made of meat. They don't ship all that well sometimes.

During shipping, they're not terribly useful for much. Maybe they can read and write while shipping them, but there's a few really fragile ones that end up sleeping or napping because of motion sickness.

And when there's a problem with shipping, sometimes they get damaged.

No? Tell that to the Texas congressmen who were on that flight that recently nosedived and recovered.

And they were being shipped back just to say Yes or No on a freaking transportation safety bill.

Talk about a waste of fuel!

As for the huggy-feely stuff, if you think kids need socialization during their growing period, then explain to me why homeschooling is a legal option for these kids.

If you're militant about shipping kid-sized meatsacks around, well, you'd better get those banners out for banning homeschooling.

Oh? The parents want their kids in public schools? Well tell me why you went ahead and had kids out in the middle of bumfuck backforty nowhere?

Just because public schools are free to the public, have you ever heard of the concept shipping and handling extra?

The education should be free, but the vroom-vroom costs shipping the meat back and forth from the processing plant needs to fall on the ranchers growing it, eh.

Podcast Roundup

Since I'm working on a project proposal instead of tickets and phone calls today at work, I've got time to listen to podcasts while typing typing away the moments of my life. (And eat some cinnamon raisin toast... yummy!)

So, let's do a roundup of recently-updated podcasts by the podcasters of Second Life.

(I build this entry over the course of the day, Daphne, so IM me or add a comment pointing out any that I've overlooked.)

Diamonds and Rust brings Nika and Keeme together once again to teach you how to peek into windows of Caledonian homes and accuse Idiots-In-Chief of sneaking around while you're away.

"I put a smile on your partner's face." has a sinister tone to it, doesn't it? (Now put a donut in mine!)

Meet Scottlo Scorbal comes out with episode 6 after a brief hiatus, recharging after a draining bout of Web 2.0 while pondering standup comedy, streaming in-world, events...

When you're ready for the hot seat, there's plenty of space on ipodjacker.com, Scott. (That goes for all you podcasting people who expressed an interest and then ran for the hills.)

Podmafia finally made the top of my queue over the weekend. The Fearsome Threesome spar once again.

I'll hold off on my comments about the New Media thing at Orange until that trainwreck finally blows up at the station.

Lots of daily content out there for you to enjoy... and more every day from Quiet Time Podcast, 100 Word Stories, The Latest at Second Life, The Daily PWN, M is for Myg's Music and SLCN.TV.

Don't forget about the SL Podcasting Network and my directory for all your (two-letter-abbreviation) podcasting listening needs.

Notice for Yrrek

Beloved clock artist and music enthusiast Yrrek Gran of Diegoland and Caledon passed away this weekend.

She added her wicked humor and dance moves to MidKnight Auer and Jean Munro's performances at Club Wicked, unable to resist the lure of jazz performances across the grid.

Many Second Life homes feature Yrrek's beautiful clocks, sundials, and other delicate creations. Yrrek generously donated a set of them for auction to benefit the Red Cross to help with San Diego disaster relief earlier this year.

She is survived by her devoted sister, who is devastated by the loss and said that Yrrek was her whole world.

A quote from her sisters email: "While I was seldom on SL I knew most of you and your happenings on a daily basis. [Yrrek] looked upon you as her friends and saw the human side of your avatars. She adored Dane and Midnight and only wished that she could befriend all of you in real life."

Yrrek's funeral service will be held (via Voice) at San Diego in SL at the Organ Pavilion on Sunday, July 27 at 4:30pm SLT. Jean will open the service with her rendition of “Amazing Grace” which was a favorite or Yrrek's.

On Celebrity

In response to this:

On the other hand Crap is exactly like you expect him to be. Humorous, generous, and an iconoclast. Crap has to be one of the most honorable and loyal person I have ever met in SL to date. He’s 100% real with 0% BS and 0% Drama. In both cases they are pretty ordinary in RL, but SL gives them a way to realize some of their potential to shine.

I'm not too sure I recognize the person you're talking about.

Nobody's 100% real and 0% BS/Drama.

I've got my underhanded double-dealing side to me. There's a line between polling folks inside discussions and stacking the deck. I cross it now and then, but it's the only way to dig out a few folks' true feelings on a subject.

But it takes a lot less energy to just deal with shit.

And as for this:

I have to laugh because when I first met you Crap I a was totally in awe. "OMG Crap Mariner I totally read your blog! I can't believe you are talking to me" which you totally laughed at and said words to the effect of "I am just like you, stupid." You were right too -- we are all just avatars doing our thing, some of us with a more public profile than others.

I repeat:

It turns out they are under the mistaken impression that I'm some sort of SL celebrity.

SL celebrity? Me?

Maybe SL is doomed after all.

I won't reveal who said it, but I didn't know these folks were SL celebrities when I went up to these people and talked to them is the coolest attitude of all.

And it certainly deflates the egos of those who get caught up in their celebrity status.

(It's something I enjoy having happen to me when I stride into a sim and get knocked down a few dozen pegs with "And who are you?")

Interface

I didn't enter anything into the Interface Contest because I don't really have a vision for what the "perfect cheer" interface would be for SL.

When it comes to design of interfaces, I think Playskool and Fisher Price. Simple. Shapes. Colors. Pictures or simple text labels. If it's not too complicated, shading or flashing for feedback when tactile is not available and sound is delayed.

Prokofy's post on it got me to thinking of the little things I wouldn't mind seeing happen, though:

Incorporating search into the chatbar. Instead of using Enter for chat and Shift-Enter for shout, Control-Enter could fire off a search with those terms. Maybe even include people: and shop: and event: and map: for firing off searches in those functions quickly.

Changing Friends into Contacts and organizing it into folders.

Tags for objects to make searching for objects easier.

Modal windows for Contacts, map, etc that you can tear off outside the client and into a second monitor.

I swear, I had a post about this before.

Or not.

Maybe I should design a better interface for my blog, eh?
