Tinkering Time with the Tinkerman

Took a break from live music last night and caught up on Science Friday podcasts while building some more features into the tower.

dedric podcast

Dedric stopped by and we had some fun coming up with ideas using the Phun Stupf lightbulb sculpty shapes.

Folks always ask why Edloe is where it is. I'll point out that it's across from Nowhereville and had a great cross-sim connection between Tam and Daph along with MaddieJenBucketFlaijenMadiJen of then-Bucket. And there's Yxes and Banana to the corner... and what was Jack Pitt's place to the far south.

Ever wandered around Woodbridge? Just strolled around?

Do it sometime. Look around. Check out the store full of gadgets. Check out the paths... the bridges. (Just stay off the top of the mountain, okay?)

There's a pretty neat pair of minds behind that place, folks.

Everyone that stops by, I ask them what the venue needs.

And so when I asked him what the place needed, Dedric's answer: vacuum tubes.

PERFECT!

He did something cool with glow in Windlight that looked really really good, so I ran with that in wiring up the venue for wire races and bulbs:

Yeah, you might think I'm a social magnet, but that's an electro-magnet, and every now and then I disconnect the leads and tinker with the dynamo powering it.

The IMs pile up, I'll get back to 'em when it's not an emergency anymore, right? It'll all work out, just hop to a music venue and relax for an hour, the answer will come to you.

When it comes to the times I value most, it's when I can roll up my sleeves, get my hands elbow-deep in the guts of a system with someone, and see what our deranged minds can come up with.

The original HUD was easy for me to use, sure, but I passed it around to a few folks and the feedback and advice from folks like Dedric has resulted in a better interface (which will get even better in version 4)... and we all know that it's the ease-of-use that makes your experience with something a quality experience.

I go to Toys-R-Us every so often to check out the Fischer-Price and Playskool stuff. Or I hit their websites.

That's how simple an interface should be. Kiddie toy simple. Rock bottom simple. You only need the lizard part of your brain to understand it simple.

Okay, so the fact that I have floating text over the items, well, I'm too lazy to make descriptive icons.

The seats... barrels... just tossed that around...

I need to add a few more and spread them out.

As for dispensing nuts and bolts, well, I'm not keen on bartender bots and food and such. Reminds me of when in pre-school a playmate would put toothpaste on a plate to "feed" to his toy horses.

It's still too weird for me, eh. Unless it's food to keep your character going in a 3D shooter (CIBUS! CIBUS! CIBUS!) and healing them up, I find that awfully silly.

(Said the guy who ordered a "Screaming Bishop with a Lime Wedge" at some place... I was being silly, eh)

Time well spent with friends earns the biggest rewards for all.
